Background
A nationwide coverage of Secondary schools (form 8 to 11) has been set as a target by the Tanzanian government, after a successful establishment of primary schools in the past. The success of the primary school program led to the problem that more and more students qualified for Secondary Schools, without sufficient places available. The Tanzanian government has subsequently decided that each community has to build their own secondary school to meet the training needs. The government has promised to train teachers and to ensure the funding for this. In reality, however, the government underestimated the demand, whilst the communities failed to fund all the plans. The non-governmental organization COSES (The Community Secondary Education Support Project) has set itself the task to build and finalize a total of 7 secondary schools for 3,000 students in Uru (Moshi Rural district), through close cooperation with People help People - One World. Msiriwa Secondary School serves as a pilot project For more information about COSES, pls. have a look at their website: www.coses.or.tz
Project objectives We want to increase the general quality of education. Secondary schools provide children with the knowledge that is necessary to successfully start their own professional lives. This is the only way out of poverty in all developing countries. Whilst the primary school teaches the basics of reading, writing and arithmetic, the Secondary School helps to build broader knowledge, understand scientific processes and important conditions for future success, such as the English language and dealing with computers. This helps people to identify outages, problems and provides a menu of solutions to step change the given circumstances of life.
Project scopeThis project covers a 360 degree approach. Construction of buildings, such as class rooms, kitchen, water supply and distribution, power supply, furniture, laboratries, text books, sport equipment and much more.
